The contours of your face may be enhanced by a variety of techniques.

Chin augmentation (also called genioplasty or mentoplasty) strengthens the appearance of a receding chin by increasing its projection.

Similarly, the cheekbones can be made fuller, creating a more sculpted look, using implants.

There are several facial features that can succumb to the signs of ageing and cause a disproportionate appearance of the face.

In particular, a receding chin can contribute to looking older, as well as the cheeks sinking due to the loss of skin elasticity and youthful plumpness. This can make other facial features look more prominent, such as the nose.

Chin augmentation, which is also referred to as genioplasty or mentoplasty, can help men and women strengthen the lower face and define the chin to decrease the appearance of jowls. Cheek augmentation can also create a refreshed look by promoting prominent and full cheekbones that highlight the eyes.

Together, chin and cheek augmentation can restore a more youthful appearance, re-balancing facial features and tackling the signs of ageing through the insertion of implants. This procedure is suitable for men and women who desire a better facial profile and want to rejuvenate their appearance.

The Chin and Cheek Augmentation Consultation Process

Before chin and cheek augmentation surgery, patients will attend a consultation with Dr Scamp to discuss the procedure, as well as find out more about the recovery time that is expected and associated risks. A medical professional will be able to tell the patient whether chin and cheek augmentation will create the desired effect that the patient is looking for and what incision techniques will be used for chin and cheek augmentation implants to be successful.

If the patient is undergoing chin augmentation, there are different incision sites that can be used for the insertion of the implant. The most common incision site is through the inside of the mouth or directly underneath the chin. For cheek augmentation, the implant can be inserted through a lower eyelid or through an incision made inside the mouth. Dr Scamp will decide what incision technique is best for each individual patient to achieve their desired results.

Throughout the chin and cheek augmentation consultation process, patients are encouraged to ask questions and raise concerns that they have about the procedure prior to consenting to surgery.

The Chin and Cheek Augmentation Procedure

For chin and cheek augmentation surgery, patients will receive a general anaesthetic to ensure a comfortable and pain-free procedure. Surgical markings will be made on the face with a pen to show where the incision sites will be for the insertion of the implants.

Dr Scamp will create the incision site into the area that was chosen through the consultation process with the patient. For chin augmentation, a pocket will be created and the implant will be placed onto the surface of the bone, with the incision site closed up with sutures. This procedure can take around 45 minutes to one hour to complete.

After the chosen incision site is created for cheek augmentation, pockets are constructed in both of the cheeks and this is where the implants will be placed. The implants are made from a soft and flexible material, which is compatible with the natural tissue. It is placed into the pocket and onto the cheek bone, moulding to the patient’s face. The incisions are closed with sutures to promote healthy healing. Usually this surgery will take around one to two hours.

Once a patient has had chin and cheek augmentation, some swelling and bruising is normal. Cold compresses can help to reduce any discomfort and pain relief can be issued. This should gradually subside in the following weeks. Most patients are able to return to work within one week to two weeks of chin and cheek augmentation. Yet, any strenuous activities or exercise should be avoided for four weeks to encourage successful healing.

As most of the incision sites for surgery are hidden, there are no visible scars from the procedure. If the incision site is underneath the chin, any scarring will be minimal and will fade over time. Patients will be able to see gradual results from the surgery as bruising and swelling reduces, but the full and successful results can be appreciated after six months.

Chin and cheek augmentation surgery results are permanent and will reveal a more youthful appearance, as well as an enhanced, natural contour of the face. The results of the procedure will create the look of higher positioned cheekbones that highlight the eyes and create fuller cheeks, correcting an aged and gaunt appearance. In addition, the chin will become more defined and strengthen the patient’s facial profile. This will allow all of the facial features to be symmetric and in balance with each other.

Facial implants provide a permanent and predictable result. Sometimes fat may be injected into specific areas to restore a more youthful fullness to your face. Treatment with fat injections may need to be repeated to gain sufficient improvement.

The goal of chin augmentation is to improve your profile by creating a better balance between your chin and other facial features. Increasing the projection of your chin will not affect your bite or jaw function.

There are several techniques for adding prominence and contour to your chin. One, performed through an incision inside the mouth, requires moving the chinbone. A more common approach involves insertion of a chin implant. The implant is inserted through incisions inside your mouth or on the underside of your chin. In the latter case, surgery usually only leaves a faint scar that is barely visible underneath the skin

Augmentation of your cheekbones is achieved by placing a specially designed implant over them. The procedure usually is performed through an incision inside the mouth, but it may be done through a lower eyelid or a brow lift incision.

After a chin or cheek augmentation, you will most likely be up and about the same day, but your activities will be restricted. You should be able to return to work within one to two weeks.

Another technique involves insertion of your own fat into the soft tissues of the chin or cheek to build it out. This technique is very safe but survival of the fat can be unpredictable and a repeat procedure may be required.
