Abdominoplasty (‘tummy tuck’) with Dr Terrence Scamp

A ‘tummy tuck’ on the Gold Coast is better known by abdominoplasty, its correct medical name. Abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the abdomen, tightens separated or weakened abdominal muscles, and reshapes the contour of the stomach. It is performed by Dr Terrence Scamp MBBS, FRACS, who provides consultations at his new clinic at 95 Upton Street, Bundall. The procedure is most often chosen by patients who have completed their family, lost a significant amount of weight, or who are left with loose skin and muscle separation (diastasis recti) that no amount of core work will fix.

What a ‘tummy tuck’ can and cannot do

A ‘tummy tuck’ (correctly referred to as abdominoplasty) addresses excess skin and abdominal muscle laxity. It is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss procedure, and the results are strongest when the patient is already at or near a stable, healthy weight before surgery.

There are limits worth understanding. Stretch marks below the navel are often removed with the excised skin, but stretch marks above the navel usually remain and may look slightly less prominent rather than disappearing. Cellulite is not treated by abdominoplasty. If there are stubborn fat deposits alongside loose skin, an abdominoplasty ‘tummy tuck’ is sometimes combined with liposuction in the same operation, or staged as a second procedure, to sharpen the final result.

Timing matters, which is why future pregnancy or significant future weight change can undo the muscle repair and stretch the skin again, so the procedure is generally recommended once family plans and weight are stable.

The abdominoplasty (‘tummy tuck’) procedure

Abdominoplasty is performed as an inpatient procedure under general anaesthesia. A typical hospital stay is around three days, and surgery usually takes one to three hours depending on the extent of the work required.

Dr Scamp will place a horizontal incision low on the abdomen, positioned so that the resulting scar can sit within the line of underwear or a swimsuit. The exact placement and length depend on how much skin needs to be removed. Where correction is needed above the navel as well, a second incision is made around the belly button so the upper skin can be released, redraped downwards, and the excess trimmed. The navel itself stays in its original position and is brought through a new opening in the tightened skin.

Separated abdominal muscles, which are common after pregnancy or significant weight loss, are stitched back together internally to restore a firmer core wall. The incisions are then closed with surgical sutures and dressed. The scar is permanent and fades over the months and years that follow, but it does not disappear.

Recovery after an abdominoplasty (‘tummy tuck’)

The patient is encouraged to get up and walk short distances the day after surgery to promote circulation, though they will move in a slightly flexed posture for the first week or so while the tissue heals. Expect the abdomen to feel tight and swollen. A support garment is worn for several weeks to reduce swelling and support the repair as it settles.

Most patients return to a desk job around two weeks after surgery. Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and abdominal exercise are avoided for around six weeks, and returning too early can compromise the muscle repair. Final results are usually visible around three to six months post-surgery, once the swelling has fully resolved and the scar begins to flatten and fade.

Results last as long as the underlying conditions are maintained. Significant future weight gain or pregnancy can re-stretch the skin and re-separate the muscles, so a stable weight and completed family planning are what preserve the results over the long term.

Recovery is not linear. There will be days that feel almost normal and days when tightness and swelling flare. That is expected, not a setback.
