Liposuction and liposculpture with Dr Terrence Scamp

Liposuction on the Gold Coast is a body-contouring procedure that removes localised pockets of fat to reshape areas that have not responded to diet or exercise. It is performed by Dr Terrence Scamp MBBS, FRACS, a Gold Coast plastic surgeon based at 95 Upton Street, Bundall. Common areas treated include the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, back, chin, and neck. The aim is not weight loss. The aim is a change in shape, in a specific area, where stubborn fat has held on despite a stable weight.

What to know before liposuction

Liposuction is not a substitute for diet and exercise, and it is not a treatment for loose or crepey skin. If the skin has lost elasticity, removing the fat underneath can leave it looking looser, not tighter. Firm, elastic skin gives the smoothest results. Sagging skin often calls for a combined approach, pairing liposuction with a skin-tightening procedure such as an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), thigh lift, or buttock lift with fat grafting.

It is worth being clear about what liposuction cannot do. It reduces localised fat deposits. It does not eliminate cellulite, and it will not tighten loose skin on its own. A pre-surgery consultation with Dr Scamp is where suitability, realistic results, and the right technique for the patient are assessed.

The liposuction procedure

Liposuction is performed under general anaesthesia. Small incisions of a few millimetres are made near each treatment area, and a thin cannula is used to suction fatty tissue away in controlled passes. The technique chosen varies depending on the area, the volume of fat, and the quality of the patient’s skin. Options include tumescent liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, and ultrasound-assisted approaches. Dr Scamp will explain which is appropriate for the patient’s case.

A single session can treat one area or several in the same operation. Duration depends on the areas being treated and the volume being removed, and can range from around 30 minutes for a small area to a few hours for multiple areas. The incisions are small enough that scarring is generally minor and placed in positions that hide easily under clothing.

Liposuction Recovery

The patient wears a snug compression garment for six to twelve weeks after surgery. The garment supports the treated areas as they settle, helps the skin retract, and reduces swelling and bruising. Most patients feel well enough to return to a desk job within one to two weeks. Physical work and exercise take longer, typically four to six weeks. Dr Scamp guides each patient through the timeline for their case.

Swelling can persist for several weeks. The final results are usually visible around three to six months after surgery, once the tissue has fully settled. The fat cells removed during the procedure do not grow back. The fat cells that remain in the body can still enlarge if weight increases significantly, so maintaining a stable weight with a healthy diet and regular exercise is what preserves the results long term.

Recovery is not linear. There will be days that feel almost normal and days when swelling flares. That is expected.
